Say Bye-Bye to Beige

Accent Wall or Feature Wall

Long, long ago in the age of beige, people were craving a little color.  Because the idea of painting an entire room anything other than beige or off white was too intimidating for most, along came the Accent Wall.  A section of color painted in a room was the solution– a tentative way for homeowners to dip their toes into the color pool so to speak.  Remember walking into a home and seeing a bold color kind of standing on its own looking lonely and heavy in relation to the rest of the room?  Remember the strong reds, blues and greens that covered a single wall in almost every room? What was once an unpredictable pop of color is now, well…sort of predictable.

Welcome to 2010 and the introduction of (drum roll please…) the Feature Wall.

Feature wall?  Sounds like a marketing gimmick.  Just a new name for an old concept.

Well no, not necessarily.

(Think of the accent wall as an 80′s hair band,  loud, showy and outspoken and overdone.)  Think of the Feature Wall as contemporary, modern and classy.

Now that many of you have embraced the concept of using a little color in your homes you may still find yourselves craving a little more.   Most homes have been relieved of all wall covering, painted in plain colors and left feeling a bit bland.  What do you do when you want a little something different to set your house apart from the Jonses’?

A Feature Wall is a great solution.  It is a canvas for a decorative paint finish or a grasscloth wallpaper, mural or graphic.  It can add spice to a space without causing a big dent in the pocketbook.  It can eliminate the need for a lot of art work.  It can be anything from paint, to texture, to wallpaper, to murals…whatever you want it to be.  And it is easier than ever to find something unique to highlight your design personality–especially when you stop at Seven’s to check out the latest in Feature Wall decor.

Here are some examples of Feature Walls done right…

This grasscloth Feature Wall looks natural and rich behind the tufted headboard.

I love this stenciled Feature Wall.  Not just boring old french doors now, it feels like we’re going someplace special…

More of a ‘feature nook’ than a Feature Wall, the red defines a unique space and is an impressive backdrop for the art collection.

This is one Feature Wall reminiscent of its older cousin, the accent wall, but it works to balance out the creamy bedding.  Notice the repeated cream color on the side walls.

How about cork by Thibaut for your Feature Wall?  It’s eco friendly, sound absorbing and just plain beautiful.

More from Thibaut, delicate and elegant… Remember a Feature Wall doesn’t always have to scream, “Look at me!”

Thibault again…(sorry I have a huge crush)  This time grass cloth with a damask pattern.

Wow, a feature wall with a faux finish and a color behind the floating shelves.  Notice how the painting technique used hides the access doors?   Feature wall with a function.

A Feature Wall fills the need for something more than plain paint.  It gives you a way to put your unique stamp on your space.  It allows you to be a designing diva and a frugalista at the same time.  Go ahead, and create a real show stopper in your home.

Name that color

I had a chance to experience pure Michigan at its finest this past weekend.  My wonderful oldest daughter, Madison, chose an activity we all could do together.   She decided on taking a canoe trip on the White River in the Whitehall/ Montague area.  Ooh, that sounded so nice.  Just gently floating down the river, enjoying the scenery and the beautiful weather.

The river was a lot trickier to navigate then I expected.  I had my oldest daughter in the canoe with me and my husband had our youngest daughter with him.   We took our new puppy along.  She did pretty well all things considered.

Don’t let her cuteness fool you…I’ve been calling her Tasmanian Devil!

(How is this related to naming paint colors? Hang on and I will get there!)

My considerable lack of canoe maneuvering skills got Madison and I into many jams and near decapitations.  We both experienced an up close and personal look at nature when we rammed the riverbank on more than one occasion.   (Thank goodness for life jackets!)  While we did not tip over, we did spend some time heading backwards, stuck in the muck and in general wishing she had decided on something tamer, like a nice uneventful trip to the library.

At one point we were teetering on a log with the puppy spinning in circles on the canoe bottom, barking like crazy.   It reminded me of those scenes in cartoons when the characters are in a car perched on a cliff until the tiniest thing lands on them and tips the balance.  “No sudden movements!  Lucy stay!  Sit still girl!”   By some miracle we shimmied our way off without tipping over.

My husband, on the other hand, is an excellent canoe driver (or paddler) and my youngest spent the afternoon leisurely perched in front, watching for turtles and other wildlife.   Every time she spotted a creature she would call back to us, “Mom, look there’s a turtle on that log!” or “Did you see that pretty bird?”

“That’s great honey, but Mom is too busy trying not to die to look at the animals right now.”

We saw (or rather my daughter and husband saw) lots of birds, a few furry critters and tons of turtles.  We even saw a porcupine on the drive up on the side of the road.

The whole adventure (or misadventure– I won’t even talk about the “Scariest Bus Ride Ever” which brought us back to the canoe livery–suffice it to say I wanted to kiss the ground when we got off )  got me thinking about paint color names.  (It doesn’t take much, does it :)!

While there aren’t any colors named:  Mosquito Bite Red, Poison Ivy Pink or Branch in the Eye Black, there are  many named after animals.    In honor of the critters I was to preoccupied to notice, I thought I would put your matching ability to the test.

With the exception of the Dog’s Ears, which I would reserve for a accent color, I could easily envision any of these colors in a home, bringing in a touch of nature.

And thank you for being a Seven’s customer!

Fall Color Tour

Ahh, back into the humid zone here in Michigan.  For a couple of fleeting days we had a small taste of fall and I am sad it’s gone :( .

I know I should be thankful for this summer weather.  Sorry summer lovers, I have had enough.  IT IS TOO HOT!!!  I don’t think I can survive another month of humidity induced bad hair days.  Grilled hot dogs have lost their appeal.  I really can’t eat another bite of potato salad.  And I am seriously considering an industrial sized bug zapper for the mosquitoes in my yard…

In order to remain sane in the midst of the sweltering temps, I have been daydreaming,  thinking about the cool crisp days of fall, mentally shopping for jeans, leather and sweaters, and plotting out my fall decorating plan.

Can’t you feel the cool autumn breeze?  The smell of leaves and the crisp clean air?

Fall is my favorite season.  As a child I loved going back to school,  drawing pictures in the frost on the school bus window,  trick or treating, caramel apples  ( loved them so much I swiped one from the kitchen when I was little and fell asleep before I could finish it.  Did you know caramel is really hard to clean out of long blond hair?  Sorry Mom!)

So in the spirit of fall and with the hopes that wishes come true, I have found a few colors which remind me of autumn…

All of the above colors look so much richer in person so be sure to check them out at Seven’s.  Just see if you can’t almost smell the pumpkin pie.  (Hmm, maybe they should make scratch and sniff color samples!)

Because most of us think about sprucing up a room or two before the holidays, here are a couple of suggestions for what to do with these great fall colors…

Try adding a touch of  warmth by painting a pumpkin colored square paint on the wall at the end of your hallway.  What a perfect way to frame a mirror adding depth and interest to a usually boring area.  How about painting the backs of your bookcases a rich color like 2170-30?  I love the thought of painting my front door a luscious autumn color like 2094-10 Burnt Cinnamon.  I can picture a den/study painted with 524 Hiking Path to bring a bit of the outdoors in.  2167-20 Pumpkin Pie works well on a feature wall when paired with a warm neutral.

I realize that as I whine about the hot steamy weather it can so very quickly turn freezing and white.  Someone mentioned that when Lake Michigan hits 80 degrees it means lots and lots of lake effect snow this winter.  (sigh)

I am sure that when the snowflakes start flying, I will be complaining about them and wishing for the heat I am crying about now.  But on the bright side, there are some pretty awesome summer paint colors too… I am just too hot to talk about them right now.

Dorm Room Decor

In a couple short weeks school will begin again.  Here are some suggestions for turning boring student rooms into something a little less vanilla.   Most student housing has rules about what you can and can’t do with your new home away from home — so please double check before getting too carried away.

Last summer I helped a sorority with their community room.  We could not make a lot of changes but we were able to add some interest with removable wall appliques.

Seven’s has dry erase wall appliques available for special order…

(they are easily removed when it’s time to pack up)

I love the circles

If you are able to hang some things on the walls try purchasing plain art canvas frames.  Stop by Seven’s and pick up a few small containers of some fabulous colors.  Paint a different color on each one for instant color and inexpensive wall art.  Our pints of paint are under $7.00

Create a fabulous head board for your bed by picking up a door from a salvage shop like Habitat’s Restore.  You can paint it with a quart of an eye catching color and lean it up between the bed and the wall.  Drill some small holes and screw in some vintage knobs to hang stuff from if you are really short on space.  Or if you are feeling really crafty, check out our instock wallpaper selections at some of our stores.  Cut strips of paper to fit the raised door panels and paste them to the door for instant color and pattern.

When you stop at Seven’s for the paint be sure to pick up a few other things for back to school

–like Dirtex cleaner for keeping the bathroom spotless

and a couple of  empty quart sized paint cans for holding pens and pencils (they look really cute wrapped in wallpaper for a pop of color on your desk) !

Heading off to school doesn’t mean you should be stuck with a boring space.  Let Seven’s help you take your new digs from ‘vanilla‘ to something much more colorful…

Toy Story Boy’s Room

Filed under: Kid's Rooms,Painting,Painting Advice,York Wallpaper — Tags: , , , — awertz @ 3:08 pm

Since most little boys probably aren’t huge Fancy Nancy fans,  I had to come up with a plan for them too.   I recently went to see Toy Story 3 in 3D and really enjoyed it.  It’s not often we can find a movie to entertain us adults, a thirteen and eight year old!  I thought it was as entertaining as the first one.

My favorite character is Buzz Lightyear (although Woody is a close second).  What little boy wouldn’t want a room inspired by outer space and a charismatic intergalactic space ranger?

Room mates makes a Buzz wall applique (we can order it for you here at Seven’s and receive it at almost ‘light speed’ from York Wallcoverings)

Place it on the wall next to the bed for the best view.

And

now for the rest of the walls…

How about

Deep Space (Benjamin Moore)?  A rich gray to emulate outer space.

Remember if your guy is hard on the walls you will want to use an eggshell or a satin finish.  The shinier you go the easier it is to scrub things off.

For the ceiling or feature wall if you wish…

Evening Blue (Benjamin Moore)

For the trim…

Metallic Silver (Benjamin Moore)

Oh, by the way, this is only named metallic silver.  It is not actually metallic but we do have that kind of paint at Seven’s too.

For the rest of the room…

Following Buzz’s advice as he readies the toys for a trip to the attic, “Keep your accessories with you at all times!”  Here are a few accessory ideas for you…

Check out this Galaxy Chandelier and desk lamp from lightinguniverse.com.  Doesn’t the desk lamp remind you of the cute little Pixar mascot at the beginning of the film?  The bedding set is from Bed Bath and Beyond.  By skipping the character bedding and going with a simple plaid,  he won’t out grow it in what feels like a month!

If you feel like you need a little more ‘Buzz’ in the room you can use these sheets from jcpenney.com

Flor makes the coolest carpet squares.  You can make any pattern you wish using their colors and designs.  The furniture set is called ‘Cosmos’  (how appropriate) available from artvan.com.  Just in case your boys like Jessie too, Room mates makes her in a wall applique.  Oh, and Woody too!

Don’t forget the Glow in the Dark wall paint.

It activates with about 5 minutes of bright light and lasts about 20 minutes depending on the number of coats.  You can use it to create stars on the ceilings or write secret messages that only appear when the lights are out.  How cool is that?  Just remember that the more coats you do the brighter the ‘glow’!

I love the idea that the paint colors, comforter set, flooring and lighting  can also be used when the little boy isn’t so little any more.   So when the guys are ready to send the Buzz theme “to infinity and beyond”  you can easily take the wall applique(s)  down and replace them with the next cool thing.  I think these colors work well for a sports theme.

Detroit Lions, maybe?

(sorry, I can’t think of any other sports teams with blue and silver at the moment)

Although if you are like me you will change the wall colors, anyway,  just because you can!

(plus I am more of a Packers fan)

Fancy Nancy Girl’s Room…

Filed under: Bright Paint Colors,Kid's Rooms,Painting,Painting Advice — Tags: , , , — awertz @ 2:23 pm

There is something about Jane O’Connor’s beautifully detailed illustrations that beckons you to pick up a Fancy Nancy book.  My own children are a little too old for the stories but we have enjoyed them immensely in the past.  Nancy is a little bit “fancy” and loves all things French.  She loves fashion and glamour and inspired me to put together a collection of colors and things to create a “Fancy” room for any little Fashionista…

Fancy Nancy Book

Start with Nancy’s Favorite Color:  Fuschia  (fancy way of saying purple)

Try Benjamin Moore’s Exotic Fuschia 2074-50.

(Definitely a fancy color!!)

2074-50-2

Accent the room with touches of green:  Potpourri Green to be exact (Ooh Laa Laa!)

Try Benjamin Moore’s 2029-50

2029-50

Pair it with creamy trim:  White Blush (sounds fancy, no?)

Ben. Moore’s 904

904-white-blush

Tres’ Bien!!

And for the rest of the room…

York Roommates wall applique– don’t you just love the ruffly dress?

Fancy-Nancy-Room-idea-2

1. Tommy Hilfiger Hibiscus Bedding

2. Lamps Plus Chandelier

3. Pottery Barn Kids Table Lamp

4. Colored Ribbon (craft stores)

5. Pottery Barn Kids Rug

6. Roommates Wall Appliques (we can order here at Seven’s)

7. Polka Dot Chair from Meijer

8. Pink Feather Boa

I love the idea of a headboard made from shutters…

With all the talk about lead paint you may be better off purchasing unfinished shutters for this.  It could be riskier to buy them from a salvage shop or yard sale.  (photo courtesy of HGTV)

shutter headboard

To distress your own shutter headboard follow these steps:

1. Apply water based primer to the shutters and let dry.

2. Paint 2 coats eggshell finish water based paint, allowing for sufficient dry time between coats.

3. Let dry overnight.  Using 120 grit sandpaper remove paint in random areas concentrating on the edges.

4. Mix 4 parts latex glaze and 1 part brown water based paint and apply to sections using a brush.  The glaze mixture will “soak in” to any areas where the paint was sanded off giving a darker worn look.

5. While glaze mixture is still wet, remove excess glaze with a lint free rag leaving some in the corners and between louvers.   You can remove even more glaze by dampening the rag if you desire a lightly distressed look.

If you really want to complete the look– don’t forget a posh puppy bed for Frenchy

or any other stuffed pups!

Ciao!

Painting Inspiration from Nature…

I have to admit that sometimes as a designer I run a little short on creative color ideas.   When I think about what inspires me I turn to nature and all of its beautiful colors and textures.

Color inspiration can come from the most natural of places.  Seven’s Paint and Wallpaper and Benjamin Moore have all the colors you need to beautify your spaces.

Paint, more than just lipstick??

While walking through the mall the other day I passed through a large cosmetics department.  As I peered at and pondered over the many selections and interesting colors, it struck me how much painting a room and applying makeup have in common with each other.

Some will call me crazy for making such a comparison.  (If  you have read my previous posts on my paint-a-holism you will know I am a little bit paint crazy.)    Don’t you remember years back when people referred to make up as  ‘face paint’?   So why not paint as make up?  Makes sense to me.   In fact it makes sense to others as well…

MAC Eyeshadow containers

Benjamin Moore sample jars

(hmm, suspiciously similar)

Our Grand Haven branch manager has also commented on Benjamin Moore and how the company is using terminology similar to the cosmetics industry to market and package their products.  (Thank you Larry, I don’t feel so alone.)

Seductive and creative, they are pulling us in with an appealing color palette and with the idea that paint can change your life, just like a makeover or a new hair style.   Any TLC watchers out there will know what I mean.  For me the best part of the show “What Not to Wear”  is the chair spinning reveal of the new makeover and hair style.  Imagine paint doing that for your room!  (I keep telling my kids I will dress really badly for a couple of weeks if they will nominate me for that show.   I could really use the $$ for a new wardrobe…but I digress…)

(Wow, what a difference!!)

Here is another way painting ties to cosmetics.  Within its  Aura paint line, Benjamin Moore calls the primer “foundation” and the paint “finish”.   What is primer other than the basis or foundation to build your paint job?  It covers imperfections and blemishes, evens out blotchy areas and gives the surface  something for the paint to adhere to.   With finish or top coat colors like AF-320 Flawless and AF-210 Milk and Honey you can further sense the connection.

AF-210 Milk & Honey, AF-210 Flawless

Even the paint can labels are stunning…

If your space is ready for a makeover, stop by your local Seven’s Paint and Wallpaper.

Just like the cosmetics industry,  we have products to combat the first visible signs of aging:   spackling, primer (foundation) and lastly, finish.

For damage control we have caulking for cracking and fine lines.

(photo from Sephora)

We have VOC free natural finishes.

Our paints have “titanium dioxide” — the original mineral wear

We have the best brushes for cutting in and blending color.

(photo from Sephora)

We’ve got beautiful shades to compliment any palette and thousands of colors to ponder,  from soft and subdued to bold and daring…

We’ve got lustrous finishes to give that glamorous glow and

matte finishes for that understated sexy appeal.

Even the color names sound seductive…

We’ve got age defying and mood lifting hues

We’ve got the accent colors you need to complete your look  (just like lipstick and mascara).

If the thought of choosing colors for your home’s makeover causes you to break out in hives (ooh, really not good for the complexion)  and you prefer to use the help of a professional…

Seven’s has in store consultants to help you display your home’s best advantages and help you minimize the disadvantages.

We have a design consultant to help by giving personalized attention in your house to pull your home’s look together.

Think of painting as a beautiful make-over for your house and see if it changes your perspective.  Don’t you feel great after a makeover and maybe a new outfit?  Shouldn’t your house feel the same?

Porches and Patios to Inspire…

Filed under: Deck Staining,Exterior,Painting,Painting Advice,Summer — Tags: , , , , — awertz @ 12:51 pm

There is something special about a porch in the summer.  Check out these pics of inviting porches and patios…  Seven’s Paint and Wallpaper carries all of the colors of paint you need to recreate these looks at your house.

I love the bold red porch swing and the touches of yellow and green.  Very summery and fresh…  Check out World Market for paper lanterns.  (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

Need a great red?  Try 1309 Moroccan Red.  HC-84 Elmira White is a soft, cool neutral without looking dingy.  HC-50 Georgian Brick is earthy and terra cotta rich on a floor.

If only my deck was decorated this nicely, sigh.  The perfect place for lunch with friends…  World Market has chairs just like these.  (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

Who can resist a yellow called Lightening Bug 340?  539 Sycamore Tree is fresh without appearing too limey.  HC-174 Lancaster Whitewash has been a Ben Moore classic exterior color for ages.  Creamy with a touch of gray to soften…

I seem to have an affinity for red lately.  Who can resist the rustic fretwork furniture ?  Make yours last by using Benjamin Moore’s Latex Metal and Wood Enamel.  You can recreate the flagstone patio on any concrete walkway with several colors of Benjamin Moore Latex Porch and Floor Paint,  or Concrete Stain. Click on the link for How – to instructions.

Meijer’s has a similar fountain on their website.  (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

Another great red, 1323 Currant Red.  Vibrant clean with a touch of blue to calm down the heat.  AF-5 Frostine makes for a sleek trim color.  1538 Wildwood Crest is taupey, greige and a natural exterior color.

Isn’t this a sweet design?  Definitely a porch worthy of a rest and a glass of lemonade.  How about a checkerboard porch floor?  Check out Benjamin Moore for detailed instructions.  (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

807 Soft Sky and 809 Soft Jazz take blues to a new level.  Tinged with purple, they don’t appear baby blue.  HC-4 Hawthorne Yellow is my absolute favorite yellow.  Bright and airy, but not knock-your-socks-off bright, it works with almost everything.

Modern Living in the back yard.  A classy mix of browns, blacks,  and metals.  Update your tired wicker furniture with a coat of Krylon or Benjamin Moore spray paint.  Spraying the paint is so much easier than brushing it on such a textured surface.   Find a similar style furniture set by Tropitone available at Flowerland and Watson’s here in Grand Rapids. (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

2007-10 Smoldering Red leaves you feeling hot, hot, hot.  2109-10 Classic Brown is truly classic and classy in this modern setting.  Black always adds a touch of sophistication.

What a clever mix of colors and textures!  A cotton rug is a a great way to create a defined space and easy to maintain. Don’t you love the glossy deep green floor?  Find striped rugs like this at Lemongrass Home in Grand Haven.  They carry Dash and Albert rugs and you may find furniture too!    (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

669 Oceanic Teal and HC-174 Lancaster Whitewash make a great combination.  Chrome Green is a color to withstand time.

If traditional is your style this porch may be right for you.  Creamy white trim, a soft gray floor and cedar shakes in a warm neutral all complement each other tastefully.   Chandeliers look great on the porch too.  Pottery Barn has cute pillows in yellow.  (photo courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)

AF-395 Meditation.  Greeny, Gray Khaki, complex and rich.  HC-72 Branchport Brown, deep, luscious brown with a touch of red to kick up the warmth.  HC-170 Stonington Gray creates a subtle glow on the porch floor.

This design from House Beautiful called for walls and floor to be painted Atrium White by Benjamin Moore.  What a fitting name for a color.  Complete with a sisal rug and funky lamp and pillows, this is a great eclectic look.   Crate and Barrel has a similar lamp.  (photo courtesy of House Beautiful)

529 Sweet Daphne and 545 Buckingham Gardens, fresh greens grown in the outdoors…

2135-70 Patriotic White echoes the sky when painted on a ceiling.

I’d like to blog more about patios and porches but it is way too nice outside and I need to get to work on decorating my deck!
